Thanks for letting me become part of your IT journey! I look forward to meeting you in person be it at an event, during a virtual event, or even through social media. Speaking at conferences, hosting webinars, writing books, magazine articles, and blog entries are some of my favorite methods to live up to the responsibility. When we do, the community grows stronger and our lives more fulfilled! I’m passionate about giving back to the IT community. I believe we all have knowledge to share. Personally, I love learning and I love sharing what I’ve learned with others. Using existing technology smarter, while leveraging next generation tech in a manufacturing space is my team’s focus day in and day out. We must endeavor to empower the use of technology as a competitive advantage for our organizations. In this day and age, IT shouldn’t just keep the lights on. Today, I work as CTO for an international manufacturing company. Everything from multi-national networking, messaging, and communications projects, to ERP, HRIS, and security projects. Loving technology, my journey since then has encompassed many IT disciplines, empowering me to complete widely diverse projects. By 16, those skills were earning me a paycheck. Blessed with a brother owning a software startup in the 80’s, I began learning coding at 13. I consider myself lucky, having spent my entire career in IT. Until next time fans, enjoy your IT adventures!
The script reports if setting each key is successful or not. If you want to automate the process and just get it fixed, I’ve created a script available from my GitHub repo here.

You know me, I’m always looking for ways to make IT Pro Admin’s lives easier. Once done, go into Control Panel and run the newly fixed Mail settings app! Repeat this process for the other keys, ensuring data is entered meticulously. Now, run our Get-ItemProperty one-liner again to verify everything is right as rain. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Classes\CLSID\\shell\open\command"-name '(default)' -Value '"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Client\AppVLP.exe" rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\MLCFG32.CPL"'

On my Windows 10 PC with O365, there are six registry keys in use for the Control Panel Mail settings app. With the files intact, my next check were the registry keys. It should exist at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Client\ and a quick check proves it does. One other app is necessary for my Control Panel Mail settings app to work: AppVLP.exe. Quickly browsing to that folder location indicates my file is present and accounted for as expected. The Control Panel mail settings app is actually MLCFG32.CPL, located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\MLCFG32.CPL in a typical Office 365 desktop installation. Oh well, enough ranting and raving, let’s get to the fix! Especially problematic since my Outlook O365 wouldn’t open because I needed to delete a corrupt profile using, you guessed it, my Control Panel Mail settings app.
#Cannot open mail in control panel update
In expected style, it provided a very non-helpful error “Application not found.” What do you mean, not found? This is the Control Panel for goodness sake!īest guess is that an Office 365 App Update sometime previous “broke” my settings. I stumbled across an issue yesterday where the Mail settings app in Control Panel on my WindPC wouldn’t open.
